Farewell, Mr. Apple!
Mr. Apple headed back to Brooklyn this afternoon; he should arrive before your last day of school.Before he jumped in the shipping box at the post office, he stopped off at Sweetwater's (a local tourist-y shop) to pick up some chocolate-cherry taffy to bring home to our new friends. He also took a few minutes to visit one of our marinas and sat a while, watching the boats cruise in and out of their slips. He enjoyed the fresh (and very HUMID) Lake Michigan breeze, listened to the seagulls call to each other, and decided it was time to head back to the familiar sights and sounds of Brooklyn.
I hope he took a really deep breath!

Mr. Apple Meets the Yankees
Ms. Wilson is taking Mr. Apple to Wrigley Field in Chicago (home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team) tonight. She's a HUGE Yankees fan and is excited to take a "local" New Yorker with her to cheer on her team. Surely, Mr. Apple is a Yankees fan?! He is tight-lipped about his loyalties, but seems cheerful enough to keep Ms. Wilson company. Now, it's supposed to rain, complete with thunder and lightning, so the game might be rescheduled. If not, I should have some AWESOME pictures to share Wednesday morning. Let's go YANKEES! (Hey, they're playing the Cubs - boooooo! - so a win is in the bag)See my comment in the comments section below for the results of the game.

Mr. Apple in Tokyo

It snowed heavily on Valentine's day in Kanagawa.
We made Kamakura(a traditional snow house) for Mr. Apple.

At the beginning of February, we had a bean throwing day (Setsubun).
Setsubun literally means "division of seasons." It is used to mark the end of winter and summer, and is derived from the old lunar calendar. However, "setsubun" has now come to mean the day before the first day of spring only. It usually occurs around February 3rd. On this day, in a custom called mame-maki, people throw and scatter roasted soy beans inside and outside their houses while saying, "Get goblins out of the house! Invite happiness into the home!"

Mr. Apple in Odawara Castle
Odawara is a town of about 200,000 inhabitants located in the region of Kanagawa, about 70 km south of Tokyo, near the much more famous Hakone.
Odawara Castle (Odawara-jo) was transformed into a large-scale structure in 1495 by the daimyo Hojo Soun, who carried out a major refurbishment of a comparatively simple structure surrounded by a mound. After that, it became the castle of generations of the Hojo family, but after it was surrendered to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who ruled Japan in the latter half of the 16th century, it changed hands time and time again because of war. It was demolished in the latter half of the 19th century when political power changed from the Edo shogunate to the Meiji government and it was condemned as the symbol of samurai. It was reconstructed in 1960. It is a fine three-tiered, five-storied donjon, the top floor of which is an observatory. The moat and stone wall remain as they were in olden times.

Take a step back in time with feudal costumes - at the Tokiwagi gate of the castle, you can hire (for a fee) samurai armour and kimono and have your photograph taken wearing the outfit, with the castle in the background.

Visitting a Shrine with Mr. Apple wearing Kimono!
Hatsumode is to visit shrines and temples to pray for health and happiness in the new year. We took Mr. Apple to Hatsumode.
He is wearing Kimono, a traditional costume.
This Kimono is Furisode, which is especcially for young ladies.
Though Mr. Apple is not woman, we do not have any doll's Kimono for man.Sorry, Mr.Apple. But you looks so nice!

New Year's Day in Japan
Mr. Apple's New Year's Day.
He had Osechi-ryori, Zoni and Toso in the morning.
TOSO
Sake steeped in toso herbs. Drinking toso on new year's day was traditionally thought to prevent illness.
In the afternoon, he went to Hatsumode. People visit shrines and temples to pray for health and hapiness in the comming year.
After that, he went a shopping mall to see SHISHI-MAI, the lion dance.
In the past, it was popular to go from house to house and perform a simple lion dance at entrance to celebrate New Year's. The lion dance was perfomed by several individuals wearing lion masks and hidden under a cloth covering;It was thought to drive away evil.
He had Osechi-ryori, Zoni and Toso in the morning.
OSECHI-RYORI
Specially prepared New Year's food, beautifully arranged in lacquer boxes. The name of many of the delicacies reflect the hope for the family's health and prosperity.

A special New Year's soup with rice cakes and vegitables.

In the afternoon, he went to Hatsumode. People visit shrines and temples to pray for health and hapiness in the comming year.
Mr. Apple ate an apple candy in the park.
SHISHI-MAI
After that, he went a shopping mall to see SHISHI-MAI, the lion dance.
In the past, it was popular to go from house to house and perform a simple lion dance at entrance to celebrate New Year's. The lion dance was perfomed by several individuals wearing lion masks and hidden under a cloth covering;It was thought to drive away evil.
At the end of the dance, the lion
"bites" the heads of some watchers, to bring luck.
