Buck the Bison in New York!

Buck the Bison arrived in Brooklyn, NY about 2 weeks ago and he has been busy since! He has been travelling around the school with our students, seeing the sights of Cavallaro. He played volleyball in the Gym, ate lunch at the 601 table, been to the after school program and more. He has also slept over at some of students houses. Bucky spent Halloween with Abdoul walking around Brooklyn and eating a lot candy. He celebrated Jahmire's birthday with him, opening presents and eating cake (he's been doing a lot eating). He went to Veronika's dance competition and the park over the weekend. We will be posting some pictures of those adventures soon. Yesterday, Bucky went home with Mr. Hutton to Rockaway Beach, NY. You can see some pictures of Bucky sitting in NY traffic and on Rockaway Beach, which was hard hit by Superstorm Sandy last year. They also took some pictures at the Rockaway 9/11 Memorial Park, you can see the new Freedom Tower in the background of a few pictures. Bucky has plans to go a Brooklyn Nets game next week. Our students love Bucky and love showing him off to their friends and family!

Doraemon - the most popular Manga in Japan

Hello from Japan.
My students introduce Doraemon, their favorite Manga Character.
Doraemon is a Japanese famous Manga series.
Doraemon, a robotic cat, travels back in time from the 22nd century to aid a pre-teen boy called Nobita.
There are available non-Japanese Draemon versions.

Chamallow Sleeps in Japanese Futon

Hi from Japan! Chamallow slept in the futon. My students told about futon to Chamallow.

Japanese futons are flat, about 5 cm (2 in) thick with a fabric exterior stuffed with cotton or synthetic batting. They are often sold in sets which include the futon mattress (shikibuton), a comforter (kakebuton) or blanket (mōfu), a summer blanket resembling a large towel, and pillow (makura), generally filled with beans, buckwheat chaff or plastic beads.

Futons are designed to be placed on tatami flooring, and are traditionally folded away and stored in a closet during the day to allow the tatami to breathe and to allow for flexibility in the use of the room. Futons must be aired in sunlight regularly, especially if not put away during the day. In addition, many Japanese people beat their futons regularly using a special tool, traditionally made from bamboo, resembling a Western carpet beater.

Western futons are only loosely based on the Japanese original, with several major differences.
They are often placed on a configurable frame for dual use as a bed and a chair or couch.
Most Japanese people would not recognize a Western-style "futon" as a futon.

Chamallow meets Teruteru-bozu

Hello, from Japan.
We made a Teruteru-bozu yesterday. Teruteru-bozu is a paper doll to which Japanese children pray for fine weather. We planned to go Mikan-gari (tangerine picking) in this morning. However, weather forecast said it would be rainy. Japanese tangerine is just like an orange. The one is front is tangerine, the one in the back of tangerine is orange. It's sweet and sour. Oishii! (yummy)

Calaveras Literarias, Calaveras del Montón / Literary skulls, Just skeletons in a heap

This year is the 100th anniversary of the death of the artist who created "Catrina", José Guadalupe Posada. That's why your Mexican friends joined the celebration and made the "Skeletons in a heap" some of his most famous skeletons using the traditional handcraft "CARTONERÍA" (papier-mâché sculptures). And the "Literary Skulls", some of the most known children's book characters (and two or three others), turned into skeletons.

Este año se recordó el centenario de la muerte del Artista que creó a La Catrina, José Guadalupe Posada. Por tal motivo, tus amigos mexicanos de unieron a la celebración e hicieron las "Calaveras del Montón", algunas de las calaveras más famosas de Posada usando la tradicional técnica de "CARTONERÍA" (Figuras hechas con papel maché). Y las "Calaveras Literarias", algunos de los personajes más famosos de la literatura para niños (y otros dos que tres), hechos calavera.

Day of the Dead with Sushitenmaru and Namenekovegi

Last Thursday we celebrate in school both Halloween and Day of the Dead.

Sushitenmaru and Namenekovegi were part of the fun! You can see them here in our Day of te Dead offering altar. With our handmade skeletons, with the guys at their Halloween Party! And visiting some offerings and skeletons near our school.

El Jueves pasado celebramos Halloween y Día de Muertos en la escuela.

¡Sushitenmaru and Namenekovegi fueron parte de la diversión! Aquí pueden verlos en nuestra ofrenda de Día de Muertos, con nuestras calaveras hechas a mano, con los chicos en su fiesta de Halloween y visitando ofrendas y calaveras cerca de nuestra escuela.

Meet Mr. Apple!

Hi everyone,

We are 6th grade students from IS 281 - Joseph B. Cavallaro School in Brooklyn, NY. We are in Mr. Hutton's 6A STEM class. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Our STEM class is in a computer lab, it's a lot of fun. Right now, we are learning how to be good digital citizens by being respectful and responsible when we are online.

We live in the Bensonhurst and Coney Island sections of Brooklyn. Some of our favorite places to go in our neighborhoods are 86th St, which is a great place to shop, eat and walk around. They have a lot of different stores. We also like going to Luna Park (amusement park), Nathan's (hot dogs), Cyclones Stadium (baseball) and the beach in Coney Island. It's so much fun in the summer!

Our mascot is a teddy bear that was donated by our classmate, Brianna. She also made the shirt, shorts, tie and his luggage, she is pretty talented. We were able to come up with some ideas for his name and our class voted to name him Mr. Apple! Check out some pictures of us and Mr. Apple in class and around our school. We can't wait to receive your mascots and show them around Cavallaro and Brooklyn. We also can't wait to see Mr. Apple and his adventures around the world. Thank you for hosting him in your cities!

NAMENEKO VEGI & SUSHITENMARU arrive in Mexico!

NAMENEKO VEGI & SUSHITENMARU have arrived in Mexico City. They arrived last weekend, on Monday we said "Hello" with a special performance about "La Llorona" legend (The Weeping Woman).

On Tuesday we officialy welcomed them sharing some japanese candy (Pocky, Hello Panda and Koala's March).

We loved Nameneko Vegi and Sushitenmaru. Children are very excited because two mascots means double the fun!

They were very curious about every mascot detail and with kanji and hiragana! :3

This weekend we are celebrating Day of the Dead in Mexico, so you'll see photos and videos soon with a lot of skeletons all around.

We loved Chamallow the minute we saw it. So beautiful!

We show her our favorite hand game “etiquette” (we will give you an instruction on how to play some time) and take some photos together in the class. After the class, Teacher Yuki invited Chamallow to dinner. The photo shows her first time to have eaten “Miso-soup”, the most common soup in Japan. Miso-Soup consists of a stock called "dashi" into which softened miso paste is mixed.

Tezca Arrives in Michigan!

Tezca has arrived in New Buffalo! We could hardly contain ourselves when the package arrived just before the end of our school day. We were taking a Social Studies test on the USA's 50 states when the box was delivered. Of course, we immediately stopped what we were doing and focused all of our attention on welcoming our new friend. You should have heard all the "oooooohs" and "aaaaaahhhs" as each new thing was removed from the box!

We loved, Loved, LOVED the gifts. Thank you very much! Each student selected a favorite to keep forever.

This weekend, we celebrate Halloween, and Tezca is lucky enough to join in the fun. This holiday traditionally happens on October 31st every year, but here in New Buffalo students go trick-or-treating on the Sunday before the official holiday. Trick-or-treating is when children go to houses in their neighborhood, ring the doorbells, and say, "Trick or Treat!" If the people in the house don't give the children candy, then the kids may play a trick on them (but no one ever does - it's all about the candy, really). Other nearby towns celebrate Halloween on the actual day; as a matter of fact, we'll have our school Halloween parade and party on the 31st and Tezca will be a part of that, too.

Before he left the building, children said Goodbye to Tezca and prepared his baggage with suitcase-shaped cards and with some gifts to his hosts in New Buffalo, Brooklyn, Montpellier and Kanagawa.

Hi!

My name is Tezcatlipoca, my Friends call me “TEZCA”. I’m an Aztec God.

I’m also known as “Smoking Mirror” because I have an obsidian glass (black, volcanic stone whose shiny surface could be used as a mirror) instead my right foot, which I lost when my brother Quetzalcoatl (feathered serpent) and I created heaven and Earth.

My favorite colors are black and red. I’m a little quiet and shy, but I’m also mischievous.

SUSHITENMARU is a boy who likes Sushi (a famous Japanese food), and
